Afro-Brazilian Museum

After the market, we headed to the African-Brazilian Museum.  It is a large museum and we would need a lot of time to explore the whole thing, so we just got a sampling.

This is the outside of the museum.

The museum houses several temporary displays.  The following pictures show some of the displays.

This is a mural from the outside of the museum.

We were not able to take pictures inside the museum, but I saw many interesting pieces.  Probably the most moving was the room that contained the remains of a slave ship.  Slavery was not officially outlawed in Brazil until 1888.  In this room there were also diagrams outlining how the slaves were packed into the ship to maximize space.  There were different shackles and restraints that were used displayed and pictures of punishment inflicted on the slaves.  Very sad.

There were also beautiful photographs, paintings and other items on display that told much about the Afro-Brazilian history.  After we left the museum, we headed to our hotel.    This is the hotel.  It is 19 floors.  The pool is on the top floor.

We were all pretty exhausted but our day wasn't done.  Next adventure dinner!!
